The Old Woman, the Leaf, and the River

To be content
said the old woman
is to drink a cup
of this present
moment so quietly
that your mind settles
like a red leaf dancing
and drifting
to the earth.

To be content
said the red leaf
is to float downstream
on a roiling current
and let go—
no destination
no fear.

To be content
said the river
is to receive all that’s offered
filling your reservoirs
overflowing, eroding,
ferrying boats, migrants
and debris and when the flood
abates, meander to sea
like an old woman
on her dying day.
