First Artichoke

  • Post category:Blog / Poetry
A young woman
naked under a loose cotton dress
in a Greek café after the rain.
an old man strums a bouzouki.

She eats an artichoke
leaf by leaf
tongues of white flesh
on her lips
a spiral of rubbery petals fall
to her bare feet.

The heart, he says, the heart
as he kisses his fingertips
flicks the kiss
her way.
